Maybe you have seen this poem or excerpt from Marianne Williamson in A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles, as it has been inspiring people for years. This poem or excerpt has often been attributed to Nelson Mandela’s moving inaugural speech, however “Our Deepest Fear” does not appear in the speech. Marianne Williamson has commented on this mistaken attribution.
If you haven’t read it before, I hope you enjoy it. If you have read it, take your time to re-read it and really take in the words and their meaning.
I hope it inspires you to let your light shine more brightly!
Our Deepest Fear
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us.
We ask ourselves – Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are born to manifest the glory that is within us. It is not within some of us, it is in everyone.
And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
